Other petty annoyances: Smells (burning trash, sewage odors, diesel fuel and exhaust from the boats), litter everywhere. It’s possible to get a worm in your foot from walking barefoot (the worms come from the overpopulation of cats!) but it’s not that big a deal, apparently, and you can take a tablet and the worm goes away.
Now there are a ton of cool features about Perhentian Island, Malaysia. The best place to see sharks (black tip) is in front of an extremely small “beach”, only accessible by boat, between Shark Point and the Teluk Dalam large beach. They are usually seen cruising the bottom of the reef. Fast boat from Kuala Besut to Perhentian Island usually available from 9.00a.m to 5.00p.m. Actually on Kuala Besut they don’t have a regular time for departure. So, ask around – you need a boat to get there. It’s an island. But to give props to Malaysia, it is illegal to catch fish or any other sea life here since this Perhentian Island is gazetted as a Marine Park by Malaysian Government. So when you’re in the ocean and snorkeling, you can make more fishes come near you, by feeding them bread.
Some folks reported that their stay on the beaches of Perhentian Island was dampened by the many arriving and leaving boats that are quite noisy. Those who have been here before will probably be disappointed about the way Long Beach has been developed. The speedboat ride was amazing.
Best to stick with the resorts and make sure that the boatmen that is providing the service from the resort is validated by the resort itself. There have been several unpleasant accounts of harrassments and indecent proposals.
The best is to stay in Perhentian, and take the motorboat to Redang for snorkelling. The crystal clear waters are great for all nature lovers and those who enjoy scuba diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, swimming, wind surfing, sailing, boating, and canoeing. It is surrounded by a virgin jungle, swaying palm trees, white sandy beaches, warm sapphire blue waters, and a colorful coral garden.
Tuna Bay Perhentian Island Resort is located on the south west coast of Pulau Perhentian Besar (Big Island), a quiet, untouched part of the island surrounded by tropical jungle, on a broad expanse of powdery white sand. Even at low tide, the view from the resort is still breathtaking! Pulau Perhentian Kecil (which means “the smaller Perhentian island”, neighboring Perhentian Besar is the larger of the two) is around 20 km off the coast of north-eastern Malaysia, close to the Thai border. It’s a tiny island – no roads, lots of monitor lizards, pretty beaches.
Turtles come up to lay eggs between April and September. The main village is situated on the southeast coast of Pulau Perhentian Kecil and the locals are a friendly and hospitable lot. Accommodation is mainly aimed at budget travellers and is available on both the main islands as well as some of the smaller islands.
