Perhentian Island, Malaysia, Southeast Asia

. Saturday, March 12, 2011

One reader recently suggested we look at Perhentian Island, Malaysia. This is a beach we have never been to – so if you have PLEASE leave us a true comment below. We hear from sources that due to increased tourism and poor management, Perhentian Island is facing coral malaise. Perhentian’s pristine beaches and vibrant marine life may lose their essence in due time.  And so they are still nice, but as we researched, we found more bad news.
Other petty annoyances: Smells (burning trash, sewage odors, diesel fuel and exhaust from the boats), litter everywhere. It’s possible to get a worm in your foot from walking barefoot (the worms come from the overpopulation of cats!) but it’s not that big a deal, apparently, and you can take a tablet and the worm goes away.

Now there are a ton of cool features about Perhentian Island, Malaysia.  The best place to see sharks (black tip) is in front of an extremely small “beach”, only accessible by boat, between Shark Point and the Teluk Dalam large beach. They are usually seen cruising the bottom of the reef.  Fast boat from Kuala Besut to Perhentian Island usually available from 9.00a.m to 5.00p.m. Actually on Kuala Besut they don’t have a regular time for departure.  So, ask around – you need a boat to get there.  It’s an island. But to give props to Malaysia, it is illegal to catch fish or any other sea life here since this Perhentian Island is gazetted as a Marine Park by Malaysian Government.  So when you’re in the ocean and snorkeling, you can make more fishes come near you, by feeding them bread.
Perhentian Islands, Long Beach, Malaysia
Perhentian Island is indeed a paradise for tourist to experience the real relaxation and rejuvenation. Along the long stretch of white sandy beach, plenty of hammocks hang between swaying trees.  Perhentian Island is also a paradise for diving enthusiasts due to its great variety of marine life and fascinating underwater wonders. The underwater world in Perhentian is a world of magical colors.
Some folks reported that their stay on the beaches of Perhentian Island was dampened by the many arriving and leaving boats that are quite noisy. Those who have been here before will probably be disappointed about the way Long Beach has been developed. The speedboat ride was amazing.

The beach is so beautiful, food – lunch, breakfast, tea and dinner is yummylicious and people are saying the rooms at Tuna Bay Island Resort were basic but cute and comfortable and the staff – so.  The boat journey of about 30 minute by speedboat and 1.5 hours by slow boat. Pulau Perhentian promises interesting holidays destination with white sandy beach, jungle interior and interesting diving are a sure combination to attract the diver and non-diver.
Best to stick with the resorts and make sure that the boatmen that is providing the service from the resort is validated by the resort itself. There have been several unpleasant accounts of harrassments and indecent proposals.
The best is to stay in Perhentian, and take the motorboat to Redang for snorkelling.  The crystal clear waters are great for all nature lovers and those who enjoy scuba diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, swimming, wind surfing, sailing, boating, and canoeing. It is surrounded by a virgin jungle, swaying palm trees, white sandy beaches, warm sapphire blue waters, and a colorful coral garden.

The marine ecosystem of this area is well documented and held in high regard by snorkellers and scuba divers. Lead by renowned PADI Course Director Azman Sulaiman; a Pro training centre and Perhentian Island should be the one you have to seriously consider when you are thinking about going Pro in scuba diving! While most guests comes here to do nothing, snorkeling, scuba diving, canoeing and touring the Perhentian Island in Terengganu, east coast of Peninsular Malaysia are options. For some, the option to just soak up the sun, listen to the breeze through the casuarinas leaves is relaxing.
Tuna Bay Perhentian Island Resort is located on the south west coast of Pulau Perhentian Besar (Big Island), a quiet, untouched part of the island surrounded by tropical jungle, on a broad expanse of powdery white sand. Even at low tide, the view from the resort is still breathtaking! Pulau Perhentian Kecil (which means “the smaller Perhentian island”, neighboring Perhentian Besar is the larger of the two) is around 20 km off the coast of north-eastern Malaysia, close to the Thai border. It’s a tiny island – no roads, lots of monitor lizards, pretty beaches.
Turtles come up to lay eggs between April and September. The main village is situated on the southeast coast of Pulau Perhentian Kecil and the locals are a friendly and hospitable lot. Accommodation is mainly aimed at budget travellers and is available on both the main islands as well as some of the smaller islands.
